On Thursday 24th February 7pm for 7:30pm start we had the pleasure in welcoming Hayley Scott. Over 200 members of the Federation attended the very successful event.
She will help us delve into the world of forensics. A former Crime Scene Investigator with the Metropolitan Police. Hayley talked about what actually happens behind the crime scene tape and shares anecdotes from her 14 years in the Police. She attended 15,000 crime scenes in that time. It was important to point out that a CSI attends to crime scenes and a Forensic Scientist deals with anything away from the scene. Often at CSI will work alone although a group may work together on a large crime scene.
Hayley was fascinated by criminology at the Brownies following a visit to a police station. She went to university and studied criminology and applied to be a CSI following a recruitment drive. She never actually served as a police officer.
Your DNA comes from your parents – half from mum and half from dad. Identical twins do have the same DNA so if there is no other evidence the perpetrator would be hard to find. A Crime Light consists of three torches which can identify evidence not visible normally. The CSI needs to wear safety goggles at the light can blind the user.
There is a difference between finger marks and finger prints. Finger prints are the tips of the fingers that are taken at the police station but finger marks are used for evidence. Finger marks can stay on evidence for years if not affected by water. Finger prints start developing in the womb between 6 and 20 weeks. 7 billion people in the world all have different prints. As we get older or have jobs that have excessive washing such as surgeons, hairdressers and cleaners will lose their prints
Shoes are also individual to the user. The way you walk, soil you walk in, stepping on a pin etc can provide vital evidence.
Hayley has lots of experience in giving this talk and has spoken to over 24,000 adults and children on Zoom all over the world since the pandemic changed the way Hayley could run her company (June 2020 to April 2021).
The evening concluded with many questions for Hayley and a Vote of Thanks by Angela Britland from The Heatons. Jean Harding, Chairman, thanked the members for attending.
