On their 100th anniversary Saughall WI celebrated their links with Chester and the village community in Saughall with a high tea attended by the Mayor of Chester, the Chair of the Cheshire Federation of WIs, Chester Town Crier, the Chairman of the local Parish Council and representatives of nearby WIs, together with long-standing members who had played a vital role in ensuring the longevity of their local WI.
Retiring President of the WI, Bea Summers, gave a brief history of the WI from its origins in Canada. Members, Jane Errington and Pam Bowes, regaled the audience with their own memories in verse of the WI. Representatives from nearby WIs attended and Selina Prescott, President of the Cheshire Federation of WIs, presented a commemorative plaque, whilst guests enjoyed a superb tea prepared and served by local tearooms owner, Lynda Rutter. Incoming President, Ingrid Chennells, said, “One hundred years old, and still having fun. Long may it continue.”
Whilst enjoying a welcome drink, guests browsed through an extensive display of memorabilia compiled by the club secretary from the club archives. ![]()
Members of the WI Committee had pulled out the stops to dress the tables beautifully in WI green and white colours. Whilst guests enjoyed a splendid high tea supplied by local tearooms owner, Lynda Rutter. The Town Crier gave an entertaining account of his encounters with tourists in Chester.
The event was made possible through the generosity of local donors (Saughall Parish Council, Mr Andrew Storrar, Saughall Neighbourhood Management Team and Marc Hallows Plumbing). Members were particularly pleased that Mrs Marie Becker aged 94 years was able to attend.
The proceedings were closed with the singing of “God Save the King”, the first time in its 100 year history!
