Arts & Crafts Sub-Committee Zoom Workshop – PDF Instructions posted here
Bauble – not just for Christmas!
MaryAnn Dryer showed 85 members how to make a felt bauble from the comfort of their own homes. Some were following along and others were watching to feel inspired to have a go. It would be lovely to see examples or use the instructions to pass on to your WI’s. Thank you to MaryAnn for an excellent demonstration and the Arts and Craft Committee for putting on such a well received craft.
Materials required:

CFWI has asked for Baubles to decorate the WI marquee at the Royal Cheshire Show and WI house, what better opportunity to have a go.

How to make a simple bauble
Materials: Felt, not too thick
Jam jar, or something round at least 2 inches diameter.
Scissors and or pinking shears.
Ribbon
Pencil/marker
Fabric glue/PVA/glue gun
Pegs
- Cut 9 circles of felt
- Put a dot of the fabric glue in the middle of a circle and fold in half.
- Put a dot of glue in the middle and fold over to form a quarter. Clip this together using a peg. Repeat this with all the circles.
- Separate the shapes into groups of 1 x 5 and 2 x 2
- From the group of 5 take 1 shape and put a dab of glue half way up the side, and place another shape on top, with the sides neatly together, and with one folded and one open side showing. Continue gluing the 5 shapes together, one on top of the other , and alternating the open and folded sides. Put the stack under something heavy to set.
- Take 2 of the remaining shapes and glue together as you have done before, keeping sides neatly together, and with open and folded sides together. Use a peg to keep them stable until set. This will be the bottom of the bauble.
- Put a dot of glue on the ends of your ribbon and then glue both ends together at the pointed end of one of the last 2 shapes with the long end of the ribbon hanging over the middle of the rounded end of the shape. Now glue the last shape onto this keeping the sides neat and folded and open sides together. Clip together with a peg. This will be the top of the bauble.
- Take the group of 5 and put a dab of glue in the middle of one end. Join the two ends to make a circle and fix it firmly with a peg.
- Take the bottom of the bauble and glue it liberally around the pointed ends and a little way up the side. Push it firmly onto the centre circle of the group of 5. You will have to hold this in place for a while until the glue sets.
- Take the remaining shape, the top of the bauble with the ribbon, and repeat at the opposite side of the circle. You can “fluff it out now “
Well done , now you could personalise your baubles, so here are a few ideas, I’m sure you will have many more.
You could decorate the circles, using embroidery /sequins/beads before you start.
If you have no glue try sewing instead.
Make different sizes, using larger circles.
If you have no ribbon, use strips of fabric instead.
Use fabric instead of felt, but you will need 18 circles, and sew 2 together to be sure the pattern shows.
Hang them singly or in groups of 3/5
