11 members of Haslington WI once again visited Denman on the ‘New Wave Weekend’ over the 8, 9 and 10 December.
We travelled down in three cars with a comfort break at the Bicester Village for a spot of lunch and retail therapy on the way down.
Lots of new skills learnt and lots of laughs and wine drunk – nearly got snowed in but managed to crawl home to Cheshire.
Meg from Denman college helped with the admin, booking us all into ‘Holly’ together and lots of extra entertainment was laid on to help everyone get to know each other and the members from other new WIs from all over the country.
We had a cocktail reception on the Friday evening before dinner and a quiz and Zumba dancing to enjoy on the Saturday night. They even moved the bar across to the Ferris room so that we didn’t have to miss any dancing time.
We left Denman after lunch on the Sunday, carrying home our treasures and new friendships and are busy planning our next trip to Denman.
Our next visit is to the newly refurbished Boars Head at Walgherton on 28th November
We are holding our second meeting on Tuesday 21st April to plan our cooperative entry for the Cheshire Show. Contact Anne Bell for further details and Sue Brown for the Cheshire Show schedule.
Our last meeting was on Monday May 11th at Cheshire Academy Broad Street, Crewe CW1 3UD. We met in Poppy’s Community Cafe for a Vintage Afternoon Tea accompanied by music from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. we were impressed by the atmosphere they had managed to create. Embroider linen clothes covered the tables which were set with vintage mismatched china and towering cake stands bearing finger sandwiches , scones and cakes. Huge china pots of tea arrived and we dived in amid much chatter and laughter. An outing with WI family is always a tonic.

In 2013 Haslington WI held a Great Food Debate to promote the NFWI initiative to support British Food and Farming. We organised a day of activities for members of the community to meet local farmers, their animals and machinery and buy locally produced food from a Farmers Market. The weekend was a great success, culminating in us being award the Telegraph ‘Bring Home the Harvest’ award.
Each year at the Haslington Village Day held on the village green in May we man a Refreshment Marquee selling homemade cakes, tea and coffee to members and friends. We had wonderful support again this year.
