Cheshire Federation is the second largest Federation in the country. ‘9000 members in 200 WIs’……….. We are excited about planning for our centenary in 2020. We were officially formed on 17th November 1920. Eight delegates and five visitors were present at the formation meeting, representing the fifteen WIs existing in the county at that time. The First WI formed in Cheshire was in Dunham Massey. In 1919 Penelope, the Countess of Stamford formed the first WI. She later became the Federation Chairman serving on the County Executive. The first County Chairman in 1920 was Mrs Dorothy Greenshields from Malpas and the first County Secretary was a man, the Rev E G Auden. Ludworth and Mellor WI were formed in 1918 but were part of the Derbyshire Federation at the time of their formation, later becoming part of Cheshire during county boundary changes.
