8000 members of the WI celebrated the centenary at a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 2 June.
Even the sun shone on everyone enjoying a wonderful day. Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Alexandra and Sophie, Duchess of Wessex spent the afternoon talking to members on the lawn as members enjoyed walking in the gardens, listening to the bands playing before a spontaneous signing of Jerusalem by members.
Members explored some of the downstairs rooms at the Palace and enjoyed tea in the large marquees. There was iced coffee, tea or apple juice served with a selection of sandwiches, fruit cake, fruit pastries and little cakes. Ice-creams were served later in the afternoon.
Most members wore hats and the most amazing selection of colourful outfits. There didn’t seem to be any duplicates except for the ‘Calendar Girls’ who all wore their iconic black dresses with pearls and sunflowers.
A really wonderful day enjoyed by all.
Now we are getting ready for the Annual Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall on Thursday.
